Performing Arts

Drama 1

Prerequisite: None

This course is an introduction to the world of Theatre Arts. This course allows students to explore the strength of their self-worth and builds self-esteem.  This is a performance-based class. The emphasis is on the Student Actor being successful.  The Units of study included Acting, Pantomime, Stage Combat, Improvisation, Play Analysis, Monologues and Scene work.  The focus is on performing and play appreciation.  It is not mandatory but each student is encouraged to participate in extracurricular plays and musicals after school.

 

 

Drama 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 1 and/or teacher recommendation

This course is a study of Advanced Acting Techniques.  Exploration of the history of World Theatre, Playwriting and advanced improvisation.  This course applies the conceptual use of theatre for production.  Each student performs a One Act on the main stage.  After class hours required on productions.

 

 

IB Theatre Arts HL 1

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama 2 and/or teacher recommendation

Year one of a two year course.  The basis of this International Baccalaureate course is the study of Theatre in the World, Theatre in Production and Theatre in the Making.  This course prepares student to take the SL IB exam.

 

 

IB Theatre Arts HL 2

2nd year of the IB Theater Art sequence

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Audition only

Year two of a two-year course. This course is based on the Theatre Arts level six program developed by International Baccalaureate.  Throughout the two-year process, there is an emphasis on learning through experience, two internal exams and two external exams. Course prepares the student to take the IB external exam at the higher level.

 

 

Stagehand Technician 1

Prerequisite: None

Students interested in a theatre career can learn about set construction and design, lighting, sound, costuming, and make-up.  These skills can help you begin your career in the theater field by allowing you to be employable as a stagehand, light technician, sound technician or costumer. Students who are enrolled in this course and who are working may earn additional credit toward graduation by co-enrolling in the internship program.  

 

 

Stagehand Technician 2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Stagehand Technician 1

This course provides advanced training in stagehand technical skills.  Instruction will include advanced training in make-up, costuming, and design.  Instruction also includes use of soundboards, lighting equipment, hand tools and other tricks of the trade. Further job opportunities become available as a stage manager, property manager or costume manager. Students who are enrolled in this course and who are working may earn additional credit toward graduation by co-enrolling in the internship program. Mira Costa College Credit Pending.

 

 

Concert Band

Prerequisite: None

Concert Band rehearsals are dedicated to the fundamental musical development of band members.  Students will study musical terms and symbols, scale formulas, key signatures, rhythm patterns, melodic dictation and general musical concepts.  There will be written projects as well as performances. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required. All freshmen will be in Concert Band first semester except for percussionists.

 

 

Wind Ensemble 1

Prerequisite: Audition

The wind ensemble is selected through a competitive audition process from the finest wind and percussion players at Rancho Buena Vista High School.  This group represents the highest levels of musical performance and performs contemporary and traditional music drawn from the finest literature for this medium.  Attendance at rehearsals and performance is required.

 

 

Wind Ensemble 2

Prerequisite: Audition

The Wind Ensemble 2 personnel are selected through the same process as the Wind Ensemble 1 and are similar in size to the Wind Ensemble 1. This group will play a variety of challenging works from the wind band repertoire. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required.

 

 

Percussion

This group functions as a competitive drum line. Students must enroll in Marching Band during the fall and Wind Ensemble, Wind Ensemble 2, or Concert Band in the spring. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required.

 

 

Guitar

Prerequisite: Audition

Guitar is a yearlong course limited to junior and seniors covering the basics of the instrument and an application of essential music fundamentals. Students will learn the basics of playing guitar at a beginning level through studying music notation, chord symbols and peer modeling. A brief history of the guitar along with a study of its respective musical styles will also be covered in this course. The main objective of this course is to create an enhanced appreciation for music through playing the guitar. Students will learn how to read music notation, chord symbols and tablature. Students will also gain a better understanding of many different musical genres including classical, flamenco, blues, jazz, rock and pop music.

 

 

Beginning Choir

This ensemble is for the beginning to intermediate students.  It combines music performance with limited dance. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required.

 

 

Advanced Choir

Prerequisite: Audition  

Mixed choir for intermediate/advanced choral students in three to six part harmony.  Stresses advanced musicianship and technique through an exposure to a broad repertoire of a variety of musical styles.  Students perform in concerts and/or festivals.  Attendance at rehearsals required.

 

 

IB Music SL

Prerequisite: Teacher approval   

IB Music is a one-year course in accordance with the Standard Level component (150 hours, 10 credits).  The course will include study in both music theory/analysis and performance or composition.  Additional prerequisite – 2 years ensemble experience (intermediate level or above) and/or 1-2 years of private instruction.  IB Music will develop a solid base in musical vocabulary, evaluation and performance.  This course has been developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

 

 

Dance 1

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of dance including choreography and performance in forms including ballet, tap, social and folk. No prior dance experience necessary. Attendance at rehearsals and performance in end of year dance show is required.

This continuation from PE Dance course furthers the students' knowledge of dance genres, performance and choreography. Attendance at rehearsals and performance in the end of the year show is required.

This highly advanced dance course emphasizes preparation for dance performance for students with highly advanced dance experience and skills in technique and performance. Dance genres include ballet, tap, hip-hop, musical theatre, lyrical and more. Students perform in end of semester dance shows and outside performances.  Before and/or after school attendance at rehearsals and performances required.

 

 

IB Dance

PrerequisiteAudition                                              

This is an academically demanding course. Students must have high technical dance skills to be admitted to the class as well as be writing at a college level due to the nature of the IB exams. The IB Dance course offers students the opportunity to build on prior experience in dance while encouraging a broad approach to the subject. Supporting the principles of the IB mission statement---to foster student appreciation of diverse world cultures and traditions---the course allows the possibility to choose a specific dance form to study in depth. The IB Diploma Program Dance course provides an appropriate foundation for further study in dance theory and practice at the university level and in career pathways.

 

 

Ballet Folklorico

Prerequisite: None 

This course is designed to teach students various Mexican Folk Dances.  This course is open to students of all levels.  No prior dance experience is necessary. Students will learn about the historical, geographical, and musical roots that make each region unique.  They will also explore the importance of costumes and how they reflect the region’s traditional culture as well as how dance aesthetics have influenced the staging of cultural dances.  This course will teach students Ballet Folklorico technique as well as other dance and performance skills.  Students will perform in our end of the year concert. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
