Learn how screen time is impacting your teen! Come to a free screening of the film Screenagers. (See links for trailer and additional information.)

DATE: Thursday, October 4

TIME: 6:00-7:30pm

WHERE: RBV PAC

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

RBV was recently recognized as a 2017-2018 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor Roll School for our high achievement and student success! The Honor Roll program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes. RBV is one of 1,798 public schools in California to be recognized.

The 2017-2018 ERP Honor Roll utilizes public school student achievement data to identify successful schools and districts.

RBV stands above others in the state because of our demonstrated ability to get students to grade level achievement and beyond.

Schools that receive the ERP Honor Roll distinction have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.

Here a few important facts about the ERP Honor Roll:

  • It’s the only award given in collaboration with business leaders
  • It includes graduation and dropout rate data
  • It establishes a higher bar of performance than any other award
  • It is conducted by Educational Results Partnership, a nonprofit organization that maintains the nation’s largest database on student achievement

We did not apply for this award. Our results led them to us!

We are thankful for the hard work of our students and teachers here at RBV. This recognition is a testament to the sustained focus on academic results and commitment to student success that our school and parent community have shown over the years.

In our continuing effort to provide a safe learning environment for students and staff, Vista Unified School District has retained the services of Interquest, a company that provides scent-trained detection canines to minimize the presence of unwanted contraband on campus.

The canines will make periodic visits to each high school campus in the District on an unannounced basis throughout the remainder of the 2017-18 school year. The canines are trained to detect illicit drugs, alcoholic beverages, gunpowder based items including guns, and commonly abused medications. Items found will be processed in accordance with school policy. Please have a discussion with your student concerning prohibited items in accordance with the student handbook.

In an effort to describe and notify students of this new service, next week, Interquest will be conducting student assemblies and parent information sessions at each high school. The evening parent information nights will be as follows:

• Mission Vista High School will be on Tuesday, April 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Gymnasium

• Vista High School will be on Wednesday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. in the Library

• Rancho Buena Vista High School will be on Thursday, April 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center (PAC)

New Instagram & Snapchat Features Parents Need to Know

Snapchat and Instagram just announced new features for each platform. We created this guide to bring parents up to speed on the new Instagram and Snapchat features that are sure to be popular with teens.

Sharing stories is one of the newest Snapchat features

  • A new Snapchat feature allows users to share Stories to their other social media accounts or through text and email

  • This new feature lets non Snapchat users see Stories content through a web page

  • Content shared via a link to a web page will still disappear like regular Snapchat Stories

  • Snapchat Stories are short videos that users share with their friends that disappear after 24 hours

  • The new feature is not widely available as of this video but Snapchat will slowly be releasing the feature with app updates

  • If the Story was originally posted from an official account then anyone can share that story via a link to a web page

New Instagram feature introduces GIFs to Stories

  • A new Instagram feature will allow users to add GIF stickers to their Stories

  • Users will have the ability to search Giphy to find GIF stickers

  • Giphy is an online database that makes it easy for users to search for GIFs using descriptions

Why should parents care?

  • Giphy is not moderated which means students will have more access to inappropriate content

  • The new Snapchat feature makes it easier to share content to other platforms (even if the content was originally intended to remain private)

  • Understanding the apps your students are using is the best way to ensure they stay safe on social media

  • At the time of this video regular Snapchat account Stories will not be shareable–but if parents become aware of this feature now then they can prepare their student for when this feature is rolled out to every account

What can parents do?

  • If your student has Snapchat or Instagram, check out our Parent App Guide page and watch our Instagram and Snapchat App Guides to learn how you can keep students safe on these apps

  • Remind your teen to never post on social media when they are upset

  • Teach your student to consider how their content might affect others before they post to social media

  • Encourage your student to keep all of their posts Light, Bright and Polite ™

  • Monitor your student with our new Footprint Friday tool that lets you track your student’s online footprint

Trio Educational Talent Search (ETS) is a federally funded program offered through Palomar College in partnership with EUSD, EUHSD, and Vista Unified School District. The purpose of ETS is to identify, select, and assist low-income and potential first-generation students to continue in and to graduate from secondary school and prepare every ETS student to enroll in and graduate from a four year university. Talent Search encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education.  ETS aims to raise awareness among underrepresented youth by providing resources and support to ETS students and parents as well as the community. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education. See FAQs.
